Fight Overview: Two prolific grapplers go head to head, as Aussie George Sotiropoulos looks to break into the top of the Lightweight division with a win over top contender Joe “Daddy” Stevenson.
Sotiropoulos’ Strengths: Sotiropoulos has excellent jiu jitsu and can submit opponents from any position. His boxing is also very underrated and technicalSotiropoulos’ Weaknesses: Despite his excellent ground game, Sotiropoulos does not have very good wrestling at all, either offensive or defensive.
Stevenson’s Strengths: Stevenson has great wrestling and great submissions, and good boxing, technically at least.
Stevenson’s Weaknesses: Stevenson has very short arms, which is obviously a detriment in the standup game, but that is the only glaring weakness he has shown.
The Verdict: Both guys are excellent on the ground, but Stevenson’s superior wrestling means that he is the one who will dictate how and when the fight goes to the ground. Sotiropoulos has the edge in striking, if for no other reason than his reach advantage, but Stevenson is no slouch, and can probably take Sotiropoulos down at will. I expect an easy decision for Stevenson.
