Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller Prediction – UFC 109

DEMIAN MAIA vs. DAN MILLER

Fight Overview:  The two most prolific submission artists in UFC’s middleweight division will meet to establish an undisputed 185 pound jiu-jitsu king.

Miller’s Strengths:  Miller has excellent jiu-jitsu, which is responsible for most of his success.  He will also probably have an edge in the standup game over Maia.

Miller’s Weaknesses:  It’s not a weakness, but Miller has controlled most of his opponents on the ground, something that will not happen against Maia, so his submission defense is untested.

Maia’s Strengths:  Maia’s jiu-jitsu is almost beyond description.  A lot of jiu-jitsu champions have competed in MMA, but none of them has translated their skills as effectively as Maia.

Maia’s Weaknesses:  Maia’s standup game is basically non-existant, and after his ultra-quick shellacking at the hands of Nate Marquardt, some questions have been raised about his chin.

The Verdict:  This one is all Maia.  Miller has the edge in standup, but isn’t effective enough to put Maia away.  This one will inevitably go to the ground, and Maia will just as inevitably submit Miller when it does.

Prediction: Demian Maia by second round rear naked choke.
