Joe Lauzon vs Sam Stout Fight Prediction – UFC 108

JOE LAUZON vs. SAM STOUT

Fight Overview:  One of the numerous style vs. style matchups being featured on this show, pitting heavy-handed puncher Sam Stout against submission machine Joe Lauzon.  Stout is notoriously tough and has dangerous punching, but Lauzon is the more technical and well-rounded fighter.  Will Stout’s will be enough to trump Lauzon’s skill?

Stout’s Strengths:  Sam Stout has a very solid chin, good cardio, an iron will, and a surplus of determination.  He also came by his “Hands of Stone” nickname honestly, as he packs a mean punch with either hand.

Stout’s Weaknesses:  Stout’s game is pretty one-dimensional, and not very technical.  He has powerful striking, but hardly the most pinpoint accuracy, and his ground game leaves a lot to be desired.

Lauzon’s Strengths:  Lauzon is very well-rounded.  His standup may not be world-class, but it is very technical.  Similarly, he may not have the kind of one-punch power Stout has,but he has shown that he can pile it on with strikes and overwhelm his opponent.  His ground game, on the other hand, is incredibly good, and he has finished nearly 80% of his fights by submission.

Lauzon’s Weaknesses:  Lauzon has a very complete game, but he is not one of the most athletic guys in the world.  His frame is lean, and while he does have good cardio he is not overly physically strong or explosive.  His patient style works well for him, but if Stout really turns it up Lauzon may have trouble keeping up.

The Verdict:  Stout is a determined, aggressive fighter, but Lauzon’s technical edge is more than he will be able to surmount.  Stout probably has a slight edge on the feet, although Lauzon is more accurate and technical.  On the ground is where the real gap lies, though, and that is where Lauzon will force this fight eventually.  Once he does, his superior technique will be too much for Stout, who will find himself caught in a submission.

Prediction: Joe Lauzon by Second Round arm triangle choke.
