Jon Fitch vs Mike Pierce Fight Prediction – UFC 107

JON FITCH s. MIKE PIERCE

Fight Overview:  Mike Pierce, with one UFC fight under his belt, is being thrust directly into the thick of the Welterweight division against top contender Jon Fitch.  While both men have good wrestling, Fitch is a much more well-rounded fighter with far more experience, so Pierce is going to have his hands full.

Pierce’s Strengths:  Pierce’s best weapon is his wrestling and his top game, where he has serious control and dangerous ground and pound.  He also has solid standup, although is has yet to face a real stern test.

Pierce’s Weaknesses:  Pierce is early in his career, and so his weaknesses haven’t all come to the forefront at this point, but his game seems very complete with no gaping holes.  Against a guy with as much experience as Fitch, though, his lack of experience against top-level competition might be a problem.

Fitch’s Strengths:  Fitch is one of the most versatile and well-rounded fighters at Welterweight in the UFC.  His wrestling is good, his boxing is good if not overly powerful, his submission game is very underrated, and he has a rock-solid chin.

Fitch’s Weaknesses:  Really, Fitch’s game doesn’t have any major weaknesses at this point, except that he is not necessarily an efficient finisher.  He has lost one time since 2002, a decision against top pound for pounder Georges St. Pierre.  He has a good submission game but doesn’t use it very often, and his punches lack finishing power.

Prediction:  Fitch is just way too much for Pierce to handle at this point.  Fitch is the more complete fighter by far, and it is entirely possible that he is better than Pierce is at Pierce’s best weapon, wrestling.  He will easily control this fight, on the feet or on the ground, and earn a straightforward unanimous decision.
