Fight Overview: Fabricio Werdum becomes the latest in a long line of Heavyweights attempting to dethrone Emelianenko. Werdum’s ground game is the best Fedor has faced in years, but Fedor is the most accomplished fighter of all time for a reason.
Werdum’s Strengths: Werdum has got incredible jiu-jitsu from every conceivable position, and very underrated boxing offense with great combos and solid punching power.
Werdum’s Weaknesses: His chin and standup defense are both questionable, and he doesn’t have a dominant takedown game to complement his jiu-jitsu.
Fedor’s Strengths: Fedor’s punching is extremely powerful, he has great takedowns and defense, great submissions, and the most violent ground and pound in the history of the sport.
Fedor’s Weaknesses: He has been bruised up on the feet in quite a few of his recent fights, and he is very prone to being badly cut.
The Verdict: Fedor is way too much for Werdum. Werdum’s jiu-jitsu is spectacular, but Fedor sat in Noguiera’s guard for six rounds and liquified his face, so he can deal with it. The most important thing is that Werdum probably doesn’t have what it takes to get Fedor on the ground anyway, which means it is only a matter of time before he gets blasted into dreamland by a huge counterpunch.
